For existing partial we will wax up a full contour to fit under the partial then scan in and copy the wax up. For us we have found this is the best way to have an accurate fit under the partial.

Attach the partial to the opposing model and scan it in as part of the opposing model.
When you do an auto occlusion cut back to the opposing cast the design will cut back to the rests and clasps.
Keep in mind you'll probably need to powder the clasps and rest.

We just have the client take a preop impression with out the partial in place, make a matrix of it transfer it to the working die. Scan wax up.

This way the partial does not need to be sent with the case.

We outsource it all right now and let them figure it out. Back in 2002 when i did it on my Cerec in lab, we scanned the wax up and copy milled it. worked good. It was our attempt at full contour zirconia crown with facial cut back. I hope the pictures show up.

I'm sure the newer machines with much improved software makes this look like a joke.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the ideas,I was hoping for a non-waxing technique so i'm going to try Bobs technique first, (I have the Lava7 scanner/software) if i cant get that I'll have to wax it.

Use bite registration material to make a jig with the partial in place. Cut the excess material away and scan that on the model. You will know where the clasps and rests are while designing the crown. Works real fast and slick for us.
