OK Guys What pressure pot are you guys using?
Did you build it or buy and official dental lab one?
Personaly I build one, My second one. The first one held out for 5 years before the main gasket went out. Went ahead and build a new one using a 6 quart (bigger) pot from walmart ($40) this time. Build it earlier this year. I though earlier this week that gasket went out on it too. Scared the Pee out of my wife when it did!! She yelled at me and told me to buy an official dental lab one. Not wanting to spend $400 on one (compared to the $50 dollar one) I was able to fix mine. Turns out the pressure gauge stopped working and I accidentally put in 60 lb of pressure! THat will make any gasket go! Anyway, got a new pressure gauge took a hammer to the locking lip of the lib and presto! (pun intended) works like a champ again. Even bought a thermometer while I was at it, so the water wouldn't get too hot.
The wife still wants me to invest in a new one, I have to admit the on from GL looks pretty nice! I called and the can sell me a used (refurbished) for $350

Just wanted to know what you guys think?

GL pressure pot

I have been using my pressure pot for 8 years now. I purchased it from a doctor that I used to work for and they had purchased it 12 years ago. It works fine, the only think is my husband had to put a regulator on it because it tended to get to much pressure build up. That does scare the @%^* out of you. I would probably by a refurbished one and just get it over with so you don't have to monkey with building your own.
my 2 cents,
trisha

Buy the one from GL.
I have 2, one large, one small. Large one will hold a sam articulator for a grand poo bah split.
It's like this, The major overhead is your time and skill. The goodies you use to produce your product should be the best out there. (and something safe as well)
Listen, you want to makw a living? You will be as fast as possible and still produce quality after about 10 years fo working with the best equipment. Time spent saving a few hundred dollars is wasted, time saved by using the best stuff is a better pay off than fiddleing around with to much R and D.
I like the steamer idea, tried that Shark steamer. Thanks Trisha I read your reply. Thing is, I just used it on 2 Bionators, not strong enough. Thing is o.k. for de-waxing springs or a little on rets. but I'm going to get one of the spendy ones next year. In that time I'll probably go through a couple or so of these little guys. I had a hard time dropping hundreds on a steamer when I was happy with my boil-out technique.
Thanks to Trisha... I now need to spend more money!!
Thing is, it's a worth while investment to have this stuff. It may only save a minute here or there, but after 38 years, I'll take what I can get when it comes along.
Also, do the math.
You save 1 minute a day, how long does it take to break even? As an example.

Hi Cade

It look good anyway even better than the one("foreign" made, please understand "..."means) sale on Ebay. Sound like this pressure pot busted cause its shield might not stand hi-pressure!?
Most shields are made out of rubber compound. Special rubber to be used for pressure pot when it mass constant changing under heat and pressure. Your first home build last 5 years but the Walmart one only last 1 year. I suspected the WM gasket is made out of poor quality "foreign" stuff.
I trusted products made in the USA, European, Canada, Japan and sorry donot trust others.
Thanks you guys for the thread. This every things are good to know Webside teach me alot.

Bye

yeah I seen that one on Ebay for sale I suspect it is just some guy making the same pot I did, but selling them to other people. I would not want that kind of liability.

Actually they are both from Walmart, the second one is just bigger than the last. The first one I used JB Weld to hold all the componts, worked great. THis time I used threaded connectors and rubber gaskets. Good thing too, because I had to replace the pressure gauge on this one.
I suspected the WM gasket is made out of poor quality "foreign" stuff.
Yeah, YOu never know, when I made both pots I had to remove all the rubber gaskets in the lid, they only held like 4lbs of pressure, and then sealed off the holes. THe gasket in the rim of the lid "shield" I kept but because of the hard water around here it lost it must have become mineralized and lost its ability to seal properly.
Thanks you guys for the thread. This every things are good to know Webside teach me alot.
I know isn't this great? My wife is glad I have some people to finally talk lab to, besides her!

Grave dig, but I got mine from this guy.

I've had it for around two years now, and he offers a warranty for a year. Good price too, and basically same thing as Lang Dental.

- I have a GL press pot and love it but it is starting to overheat the water - any ideas?
Also have a Bella de St Clair steamer; they got bought out by Kerr but a great little steamer for removable stuff. I recomend only using distilled water in them though. Had them in the AF and had issues if we did not, if you don't want to use distilled get the cleaner and use it alot depending on your water type.

Hi Candi,
Maybe take the pot apart and see if you can find something to adjust. That's what they would if you sent it for repair. If nothing to adjust, maybe you can get a new part from GL.
I have 2 GL pots, they both behave. Just waiting. I would like to be able to adjust the heat in them. Probably a concern over insurance coverage not be available if the public can tweak them to high, and do a Cade.

old thread but just wanted to say that Ive been using my walmart homemade pressure pot for over 5 years no problems. my ex-boss has been using his for over 15 years. I have two home made ones running in my lab. I just made up a second one the other day. The 6 quart WearEver pressure cooker form walmart is great! It has a built in adjustable safety valve! I Got it for $35. THe only other thing i needed was a $2 valve stem from the auto parts store. I took out the 10psi weighted valve thingy, bored out the hole to 13mm, inserted valve stem then adjusted safety valve scew to get my desired psi. you just fill the pot with air untill the safty valve starts to leak a little, thats it, Done! It is the best ever! It's just as good as an "official" dental unit but for only 15min of work and cost less than $40!

Home made pressure pots are ok. I personnally use two Mestras which have been faultless except for a leaking seal around the release vlave which was fixed with a cut off from a mouthguard blank!

Ebay handpieces forget it, spend the cash - take a kick in the teeth for the $1800 NSK that will work through your toughest day all day and every day like new from a box.
A Kavo as well.
Steamers - expensive and German, nothin else will do.

Time saved is money made. That goes for staff. More staff = more output.

Does anyone have a problem with build up in the pot? We call them "barnacles", haha. Our newest pot is also pitting. Why would this happen?

Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially to another when both metals are in electrical contact and immersed in solution. dissimilar metal corrosion' or wrongly 'electrolysis'
aluminium, stainless steel & brass with type II or type III stone. plaster crystals dissolving metals, α-cal.sulf.hemi. CaSO4•(½)H2O as the plaster disolves in the water you can get a weel sulfer solution heat helps to disolve you pressure pot and deposit a white aluminium sulfide blob.
