I recently purchased a scanner with hoped of my brother, who is not currently a technician but has worked in a dental lab for 7+ years, running it. That said, as he learns I would rather have someone else working it rather then it collecting dust. I am looking to hire an experienced and dedicated tech in hopes of expanding the department. I am unfamiliar with what the starting pay would be considering I have only ever hired traditional ceramists. Can I get some opinions?

What type of system do you have??

If they are only scanning and designing, maybe a salary of anywhere between 2.5k to 3k...more if they know how to fit and adjust whatever comes out of sintering.

i make enough to afford the occasional big mac, a decent internet connection and rent a room.

but i have since upgraded that to owning my own condo (which is cheaper than the rent i was paying)

basic middle class standard of living.

You have a room and then a condo......no sleeping under the bench? You must be very good at this.

Only 50% of workers pay any taxes here so if you pay you are in the top 50%.

It all comes down to the techs knowledge on the system, I know some tech that only know how to design and are completely useless on the entering and scanning side of the system and also how to edit the materials or create them if needed. Yes tech support is there but not really for the stupid easy stuff. You going to pay salary or piece work? Do they have to run a mill and cam software as well? Coloring of ZR and fitting as well? There are a lot of things you need to know before hiring a schmuck of the street that talks the talk but can even walk, LOL.

Start at 25k-35k scan/design ONLY average design of 30-40 units a day. Depends on the tech skill level. But they run the department and when a issue arises they know how to fix it and must be great with computers.

I myself setup our entire Cad/Cam department, 1 scan/design station 2014 3shape and 1 scan/design station 2015 3shape with separate Design only station, 2 Cam stations each with a mill, wired them all on the same network with a switch and custom made Cat 5e cables, Setup both 2014 and 2015 material files, setup the databases to be different from each other but use the same dongle, setup all the libraries and implants, setup bot the mills and made all the air line and hardware install. Know how to fix the mills when they go down, know all the work arounds for 3shape and tricks to makes stuff it wasn't meant to make. Know how to design in SolidWorks (external cad software) made custom attachments and so on. I am able to figure workarounds out on the fly and very quickly, Also do the coloring of all the ZR, know how to fit, Design custom abutments, sintering techniques on large span bridges and I know a lot about implants systems and what parts to use when. Know how to handle large complex cases from model room to the end. Very hard to find people that are capable of all this and have a little bit of common sense.

I think I get paid under what my knowledge is worth but now a days people really don't pay for that cause they are too cheap.

To be honest know people who make 36k a year and up to 150k a year all depends how valuable you are to that company location as well if that area is limited to talent in the field and how much you will have to be trained and adapt to your new environment. Also a lot of people exxagerate about what they know how to do until you put them to the test and they cant do it. Talent is not cheap and if you find it hold on to it there isnt a good tech on every corner ive been looking for techs for months in my area but have not come across any used to have more responses

The good ole saying "You pay for what you get" is very true here. The salary is relative to your situation, region, cost of living...etc, etc..

The real question here is what are you WILLING to pay a CAD/CAM tech and what are your expectations? That will guide us to telling you

how much and what kind of tech you should expect. I agree with Sevan, good techs are hard to find and when you do find one, you better

pay them to keep them happy. One knowledgeable person can really grow the whole operation exponentially, you just have to give them

the reigns to let them.

To tell you the truth salary won't get any higher in this field for dental Cad/Cam specialists because software is getting better and more intuitive.
Prices are going lower because of globalization in dental market and competition between local and offshore labs.
For poor men case like ugly *ss FCZ single crown for a peny Docs won't afford to hire lab with CDTs in states, they will outsource it to rice lovers or other guys who will work their *sses for a few bucks :(

Yes, but there will always be drs who would rather pay a lab to make it right than to make it twice.

In France, for an experienced professional and with a big machine (Willemin and more …) 2700/3500 eur net !
In this case ,the difficulty is not the cad but the cam ….
