The only time i fire on a pillow is if im making a shade tab, then ill up temp 50c. That over fires the tab to a glazed finish which is the whole point, but it wont be any good for calibrating temps.
What i cant figure is you say ur using a P500 Edy, so why dont you just use the auto mercury calibration and and take all the guessing out, thats one of the great things about that furnace ( i use the p700, same thing). If the clear still isnt clear, you know its the ceramic, not the furnace.
If your still gonna try and dial in manually, rather than foil, you could get a spare emax coping and fire the clear onto that, with it on a pin. a 2-3 extension off the coping will be enough to see if its clear.
