That seems like a great service to offer, but I can't imagine what a feasible price would be...

Being out of the lab, driving, bringing all the stuff I would need...

I have heard of it being up to $250 for that service , I refuse unless it’s something crazy.

I do. Because I work out of my house. I charge $35 which is chump change. However it usually coincides with a pick up or delivery and give me a chance for a little one on one time with the office.

Custom Shade or Custom Staining? If they come to our lab (we have a dental chair in our waiting room) then we charge $25/patient to snap some photos. As for going out to custom staining in the Docs office, we do offer this service, cost is $100. However, if it's a big case or multiple crowns, then a PITA charge is applied of $250. Hope that helps.

You may consider an hourly fee with a one hour minimum.

Tripple your in-lab shade taking and make it per hour starting with when you leave the lab till you return with a 1hr minimum. That's one way. Still doesn't get the work done while your gone though.

Edit:Should've looked up BeerBanghead

I was thinking custom shade pictures and stuff. That's great you offer that. I could see it getting bigger.

Yeah that's so cheap. I guess it's different for everyone. With some things I feel like if it's so cheap then the doc might feel like they're asking for a favor when they ask for it. And asking for favors is harder than just paying for something sometimes.

We do it for $100.

We have 3 technicians who perform the service, as well as a professional photographer who sometimes goes out with the technician to do the photos.

Several of our larger clients have 1-2 of these per month for free as a courtesy.

Currently we are training 2 more technicians for this as well as in office repairs/attachment pickups and an additional conversion specialist

have these costs increased over the years?
we have gotten so many lately that we might have to start charging for custom shades.

$35 for custom shade appointment in the lab/ i will occasionally go to local accounts within 30-minute radius ( $50)
should be more but typically its some of our most loyal accounts

$69 in lab only. If we leave it better be a big case and not a single unit

Good to hear this, Ive started charging $25-50 depending on the difficulty and time taken. Offering this for free is a great way to pick up local clients, but it takes its toll when they start abusing it, which is why I started charging.. 2-3x a week turned into 1-2x a month..

the time has been the kicker. not just the 15min or so it takes for the shade, but the interruption of workflow...especially when patients show up hours early (or late).
it went from a shade here and there for tricky cases, to 5-7 shades per week or more at times.

I agree - I always see the patient in office so it’s minimum of an hour and a half away from the bench. It’s a huge inconvenience for a small fee - I try to get them to consolidate the appointments so I can see 3 or 4 in one shot. I’m not as concerned about the fee as much as I am the time savings - every hour I’m away from the lab is an hour later I have to work that day.
