Nice Al, looks like a great price on top of it. Any issues using Windows 10 'HOME' versus 'Professional' using 3Shape?...I know with Exocad they prefer we use Windows 10 Pro.

For the demanding tasks, I would still recommend building your own as most OEMs will charge hefty premiums for additional RAM, a beefier GPU, etc.
Might as well pick out your own and get exactly what you want.
Nowadays, a high-end Core i7 (especially the newer Coffee Lake generation) + 16GB RAM or more and a GTX1070 or more is all you need.
Make sure your OS lives on a SSD drive + regular hard drive for case archival (ideal would be a regularly backed-up server) and the rest is up to you.
I would select a power supply unit that has at least 20% headroom on top of your calculated power requirements, to allow it to work less hard (last longer) and allow for future expansion.

For the less demanding stations, my personal choice would be either Mac minis (you can install Windows if your software/workflow requires it) or iMacs if budget allows.
They are compact and silent, they look professional and are reliable machines. The cost is a little higher than a low-end PC, but they will last you longer and be more pleasant to use than the compromised hardware most econobox PCs use.

Mac mini is due for a refresh soon, so I would wait for the new model before committing.

I'll save the Apple-haters some time, I will not engage and argue with you, sorry!

I think buying any computer today with only a spinning hard drive is a mistake. At the very least get a small 250gig SSD for the operating system with a spinner for file storage, at the very best get a 1tb SSD for operating system and storage. SSD hard drives are so cheap now...

Once you go SSD you never look back.

Depends...what are you trying to use with it? How long before you are looking before you will upgrade again?

I say build for what you need. You want a graphics/processing heavy pc for design. I also would say to get the faster Mghz of RAM for design. For CAM, a high end video card isn't really needed, so spend the extra money on more cores for processing. Most CAM soft wares these days will let you hyper-thread the processors, so it will be much faster on the camming side.

Are some graphics cards more suited for cad then others ? The reason I ask I was just at the local techie place and they suggested a Quadro P2000 5GB card over the GeForce GTX 1070 8GB.

I'm not sure if the Quadro series of graphics cards are technically supported/tested by 3Shape now. The Gefore GTX series are usually good. The more RAM the better for designing.

Here is my monster build i just did 8 months ago
Intel i7 7820X 3.6ghz 8 core
G.Skill TridentZ 64GB DDR4 Sdram 3200 (PC4 25600) (4x16gb)
MSI X299 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard
Samsung 512GB 960 Pro m.2 SSD (as boot drive)
Western Digital 2tb Desktop Performance Caviar Black HDD (data storage)
Evga GeForce GTTX 1080 Ti FTW3 11gb GDDR5X
Evga SuperNova 750watt 80plus gold certified
Noctua NH-D15S cooler
All inside a Antec 1200 case.

Runs 3shape like a charm powers through large cases no issues. Should do well with cam software as well.

But instead of the 1080Ti i would of gone the route of Quadro P4000 for a touch more it kills the 1080Ti and top AMD cards like they were nothing!

Quadrio P4000 on a solidworks bench mark blew all graphics out of the water!

Do you have that thing on its own dedicated circuit ? Did you see any test results on the Quadrio P2000 5 GIG Card?

Interesting, thanks. I don't understand it completely how they all interact but trying to learn. Anybody have any experience with the Quatro cards ?
