I have been using pencil, but my dr. doesn't like the black dies left behind.... Any suggestions?

I color the prep with pencil and check the fit, Typically there are a few spots that need to be relieved to fit the crown.

I tend to like Valacon red, it steams off cleanly. The green is especially easy to get off. I think you could use a toothbrush with soapy water to get it (green) off?
I seal my margins with clear coat, even the occlusion which I sprayed
and wasn't sealed, steamed off nicely.

And if you need a cheap steamer, I'm sure CRob has something in his shed he can sell you.

Spray the crown, wipe the die when you’re done, there won’t be much on there anyway.

Learn what the problem areas are and tweek your cement space.
Change burs on schedule.
If you must, lightly touch youre likely areas of issue with a small bur before sintering.
I do tons of model free iTero with no issue. Remember, iTero models arent super accurate.

I outsource milling. I thought itero models were pretty accurate.

As accurate and detailed as a fat 2mm bur can do.
Ive done a bunch of cases with both iTero and PVS (on the same case)
When one of my Drs does a case for family, they always choose PVS. Try seeing the details of the labial surface on an iTero model.

I get the model is washed out, but I thought the die prep was more accurate than that.

Everything is there, but you will sometimes get little bits of 'extra'. Youre not going to have an issue detailing your fit to adapt to the die, but your design was based on the scan and is likely a very decent fit as is. If you were to use an iTero model and fabricate a crown old skool from it, youd be betting a looser fit than youd like.
Youre going the extra step though, and thats a good thing.

An iTero die sprayed with CRob green, then steamed off. Using a toothbrush and soap didn't get it as clean as a steamer,
which IMO every lab should have ;)

itero models, no steamer
Have you tried to place the die into soapy water and then ultrasound it? I did that recently to get the Vacation spray off and it worked. And then, since you don't have a steamer (I can't imagine my live without a steamer!!!) maybe a soft toothbrush will help you to get the remnants off.
