This month (Nov) i had to pull the trigger on a new scanner and ended up with one that uses Exocad instead of 3shape.
Just about a week into playing with exo and its going well. def a learning curve as theres much more you 'can' do with it, and the buttons, tools, etc are different.....so theres that part of it. but its great so far! no complaints. just need to get into the workflow and get comfy with it then i can shave down my design times.

I havent been a big fan, I really dont like how the teeth are manipulated comparatively.. The outputs I get are gross sometimes.. way too bulky. Although some of the features are amazing, way beyond 3shape.. Im really waiting for them to have a child.. that would be ideal. Ive been using both for years, and I find myself only using exo if 3shape is buggy, which it definitely is more so than exo.

first case i designed on exo was a 10unit full contour. hands down faster and easier to create the crowns than in 3shape.

Uh I was just thinking of making a post similar to this.

I have experience with exocad and been looking into 3Shape.

Would you say that it is easier to get good designs and anatomy on 3Shape?

I feel like the learning curve for exocad combined with the way teeth are modified/adapted in the free form steps do not get as good results as 3Shape? Although I can't say for sure as I have never used 3Shape....

im still getting used to exocad, and yes there are times i would like some of the 3shape tools for mods to deisgns...but i cant tell if thats just because of muscle memory or not. once playing and searching through things a bit i am finding the tools are just different and i can get similar results. 3shape is for sure much better at hand holding.

I have used both. 3shape for many years then switched to Exocad about 2 years ago

I'm still learning and Exocad and spend more time than I would like to admit on designing.

I just find the Exocad tools when adding and removing and pulling to just not work quite right.
I miss the " bounding boxes" on the teeth in 3shape. Also the easy way to adjust the size of adding/ removing using shift and control on the keyboard.

I'm sure I'm just missing something. Maybe the presets are just not quite right. And the tooth anatomy libraries borderline on the insane.

However when I design in 3shape every once and awhile I find myself completely used to Exocad.
Even exported the file to design in Exocad.

I used Exocad for a long time with Scheutz and now with Nobel (although not too often) I have DW for my main scanner/CAD and really miss Exocad.

I only use the standard library on exo. I wish I could sit with the doubters a while. Ive used both exo and 3Shape. Understanding the 'why' of initial placement and then the morphing tools...which and why, would make you believers. Hot keys are great, but I only know and use a couple. Its an amazing tool.

@2thm8kr Posted some pics of a few libraries in exo years ago showing what parts are effected with morphing tools. Pretty cool. You can always paint areas to move or not move, but I never use them. Many ways to skin a cat with exo

I'm not a doubter. I like Exocad.
So many tools that you can use.

Just find the morphing steps to do strange things to the design. I believe Exocad even came out with a fix for that in its latest update.

'Freeform anatomic behavior in CUSP mode is now back to 2016 behavior
on tooth library models i.e. when the user clicks and moves a cusp area, it only changes
that area and no other tooth parts"

Exo is definitely the more advanced software, no doubt. I cut my teeth on 3shape (nice pun) so I guess I am more used to it, but the arrow manipulation tool and the morph tool just work so much better. I just dont like the way the library teeth are manipulated in exo, most of the anatomy is way over done and I have several libraries. Since I scan in 3shape its much easier to just design it. Having said that, the fits that I get from 3shape output are far superior than exocad, but Im still trying to tweak the settings.. I just feel like I shouldnt have to 'tweak' settings.

You cannot adjust the mg after it is set, if you notice something later. That being said I have EXOCAD6155 and am looking to pull trigger on Valletta thae latest build. I would also add model builder which won't be cheap as I thought. I have another concern is that I receive a lot of Trios scans, so a printer is also coming. That being said I heard Argen offers 3shape with no scanner for 450$ a month...Not sure I would want that, cause then it'd make more sense to just use 3shape to build models and design IOS crowns? The other option would be to use 3shape to print models and export to EXO for design NETWORKING computers not my deal. I also have concerns with bugs in 3shape, but I am sure Valletta will have its share? In addition, I now cannot do certain implants with Exocad as they always seem to be last to party for the software libraries?? All that being said,I am pretty set on the Nextdent 5100, not sure there software is capable of generating solids and dies to start and then putting software off till earlier next year. Otherwise it'll be exo update and model software+computerx2 and a network specialist visit to office.
I am sure this will get some responses and I appreciate all of them! Thanks!
Mike
