Hi all,
I have just set up 3 Shape Dental Designer, Ortho Analyser and exocad on a new Windows 8.1 Laptop as a testing machine before we change to Windows 8.1 on others in the future.
Quad Core i7 Processor 4Gig Nvida Video Card 16 Gig RAM

Both programs are performing poorly.
I also have SUM 3D and Ortho Studio and these programs are going great, actually my 3 year old mac running Windows 7 runs the same programs really well.

I have set the programs to use the Nvida card ( it has a an Intel Graphics card as well )

Anyone have any tweaks or settings to check that can get these programs working better.

Thanks !

there are a lot of ways to bog down 3shape. lets start at the beginning with Hardware:

1. hardware speeds. ok you have 4 Gb video card but have you actually Benchmarked it, or read the speed rating on the box? some really cheap 4Gb cards are sub-800Mhz. the good ones are mid range price, clocking 2-3Ghz but very few will tell you any of that unless you dig pretty deep.

2. hardware type; RAM suffers from bottlenecking. your CPU speed and RAM speed should be about equal, if not CPU speed faster. but again the hardware can get bogged down if your operating system is using excessive VRAM, or is low-prioritizing your 3shape requests, and maxing out bloatware speed like antivirus or firewall, or Free Online Poker *shudder*. in therms of your CPU theres no real measurable quantitative difference between i3, i5 andi7 processors apart from their names; Intel even came out and admitted it publically.

3. system throughput; modern solid state hardware performs exceptionally, except running 32bit software (which will only ever utilize two cores of your processor, so PAY ATTENTION to individual core speeds)

now lets move to Software.

1. the NVidia control panel opens up your programs to utilize the graphics display that best suits your performance needs vs the Quality of the display in items like rendered lines, fluidity of shaping, rapidity of calculating animation, and others. for 3shape the video card is not used for much of the work. sum3d uses it quite a lot when doing Simulations.

things don't get a lot better if you are installing 3shape to be used via server, or though a VPN for home use. yes, communicating to the hard drive is one less step, but that step takes 10 times longer to do through a vpn.

bottom line here terry, we'd need more information, both about the system iteslf and the specific times you see slowness.

Thanks, appreciated.
I am actually quite familiar with hardware architecture of modern computers and their workings, but can always know more.

Actually 3 Shape and expcad will run with low end video cards no problem... even exocad at least..Win XP! Not the next version though.

I have an old Intel 840 thats running exocad like a dream with 8 gig RAM and a really Cheap GT220 Video card... ( Win 7) in use everyday and great.

What I am not so familiar with is Windows 8.1 and how these programs are running. Both are 64 Bit and running like rubbish.

Has anyone any experience with Windows 8.1 and these programs?

As i said I have an old MacBook Pro with far less specs running Win 7 and the programs run perfectly...

Now this PC i refer to is a brand new install...no bloatware, no virus protection rubbish, no adware, pornware etc. A Virgin.

But 3shape and exocad are not running well at all. Any suggestions as they should run better than they are.

Terry, I had windows 8.1 on a computer built for 3shape. It ran like crap. I ended up installing on my AMD windows 7 rig with no issues. My understanding is that 3shape has gone back to windows 7 with new systems? That's what I was told by my distributor anyways?

Your present hardware configuration is more than enough to run them both.... Simultaneously lol

If you never make a decision then your possibilities are endless.

Terry,

It's not your computer, it's Windows 8.1!

Can you downgrade to w7 os? You may then need to reinstall necessary drivers. Which can be a pain to find, but if its just for dedicated cad you shouldn't have any problems.

i've come to accept W8.1 - and also, I've noticed things run faster. W7 was great, but it did bog down at times.

win8.1 should be fine with exocad. One of the last 2 releases optimized it for this...
