Does anyone have a good method for carving anatomy in wet porcelain. Tired of carving with a handpiece. Always looks fake.

Gdentallab: Smilelines stuff is great, i have their Umid Tray and a few other bits but dear god, go to your local art shop for your brushes, you will save a shed load of cash and get as good if not better quality.

I use a endodontics file for the pits and also a SMILELINE brush size 8 (dentin) and size 6 for incisal/anatomy. Like Amadent stated, get yourself some pictures, put them around your lab, especially where you build. I know Quintessence has some great books out there with beautiful pictures that would help you as well.

endo file and a #6 smile line Kolinsky for me as well.I use tap water and the dry brush technique. I let the furnace do the blending of the grooves.

I use an endodontic tool for root-canals super glued to the end of a stick. I bend the barbed end of tool to disired shape. The barbs help hold on the loose porc. and to make more of a random effect.

Carving anatomy in wet porcelain

Does anyone have a good method for carving anatomy in wet porcelain. Tired of carving with a handpiece. Always looks fake.

Here's a good way to do it: Using an endo reamer (ask your dentist or pick up a sample at a dental show, or purchase a small set, usually six to a box),using an up and down "sewing machine" movement, dipping in and out of the occlusal area "sew in" the fossas all the way into the coping and fire. Fill in second bake, but not all the way into the coping. Nice, natural fossas, and no burs to wear out. Good luck.

amadent: you hit the nail on the head with that book

One of the first books i bought years back.

There are some great sections for building posterior anatomy and i would highly reccomend it.

Porcelain Reamer Instrument

SmileLine-USA in addition to their complete line of brushes, also sells a complete line of instruments, including a "reamer" (endo file) that fits into one of their handles using a "reamer holder module".

Their online catalog is at: Instrument :: smilelineusa.com - Superb Swiss Quality Dental Lab Supplies

I also like the Claude Sieber "Art and Experience" brushes and instruments,
which can be found at Denco Enterprises, Inc. The brushes are also made with
acrylic handle and replaceable tips, however I find them to be a little more comfortable to hold as the handle is a little shorter and fatter than the
SmileLine brush. Both are top of the line brushes for ceramic build-up.

Would any of you be willing to part with any of those books? I'm in the market but definitely cannot afford over $200 for one of them.

Try building in stages, until you get the hang of it. Spot some cones and triangular ridges then fire. It stabilizes the occlusion. Then build the rest.
