That's true, but i would say everything in dentaltech need time, know-how and training of years.

When you have so much work in one department.
Maybe its better to get one more specialist technician. Than source out and lose the control of your design

even you outsourcing your design work , how could lose it ?? you pay for it , so you control it , if the design center can not design as good as you expect ,ok just do not pay them. this is easy business , you do not need any shipping ,export and import .

this would be a very good business in future , just do it .

I would be interested in paying for this service. Single FC posteriors for example.

How many per day do you have and how much are you willing to pay per unit?

I did not mean to say dont do that .
Also not that there is no one who can make the designe so as oneself or better .

Rather the one " more " control has if you do it yourself .
And if you already have the equipment / option for this. Then you should also use them .

Its not much different than in other areas in dental technology

Just be careful who you send it to guys, looks like a Chinese lab Phishing!.....Thumpdown

I have been quoted $7 USD per design. Depending on quality/consistency, there could be up to 50 a month. Maybe much more maybe much less lol. Depends if it works out for both parties.

Full contour for milling, pressing. Split-files for PFM/PFZ. Perhaps some anterior work too. I have been using the CAP library myself for 3-4 years

We just had our 3Shape set up, 2 days training.... sending files to Argen. had a tour of the facility... its impressive!

my first restoration was 4 custom abutments, 8 copings... all fit great!

Did Argen provide the design work?

no, I did the design work... we just bought our 3shape from them... great training and service... then uploaded the stl files, in 2 days I had the abutments and copings

Argen and Bego are two of my favorite milling centers! Chock-full of support!

How about a site for freelancers. You could put up jobs with details and time frames then dental cad designers for all over the world could bid on the job. They would have their credentials, education and experience on the site. Even a portfolio of their work to look at. A place for customer feed back would also help.

Even the labs doing their own design could freelance when things are slow and have a place find talent when they are overrun with work.

This is not a cheap undertaking. I've been working on it and is a big expense site to get up and running unless to are site designer that can write code. The big guys like 3Shape and Dental Wings could do it and make it profitable by taking a small percentage from both ends of the deal to keep the site up and be the middle man for the money to make sure each side get a fair shake. They could then have a place for their customers to make extra money and a reason to keep the newest scanners and software.

Lack of designers is the one thing holding back growth for many out there with mills. IMO CAM is work that needs mechanical skills and not a big dental background to keep a mill running and a much easier job to fill. Then there is the need for more dental training to finish the millings.

The new Gurus in the lab industry will probably be Dental CAD Design Engineers.

Won't work. At least not the "bidding"element. Unless you don"t give a rat's a## about consistency. J

What kind of turnaround time do you need?

Interesting post Tom,

There's a site called 99 designs.com that has a similar approach. You offer "prize money" to the winning design. Therefore you get to choose the best design from the pool of entries.

You can view each entrant's portfolio and it provides a venue for upcoming talent to promote their skills.

The site receives a small percentage of the prize money for their share.

What's the average time spent on design of a single posterior, including loading and emailing final design... not ot mention accounting for any ratty margins.
