virtually any scanner can be made to work with exocad but no, exocad is just design software. exoscan is an optional extra you will just end up paying extra for if you don't like how the baked-in scan software that your scanner comes with, works.

Not yet, if basic CAD is purchased then exoscan can be activated by the reseller for no charge. It comes in handy if the scanner software that comes with a specific scanner sucks or has extra steps that are not necessary.

Nothing is free in a socialist society. The money for expenses comes from somewhere....

There are quite a few to choose from ... check which one has the best support in your area, then ask here for opinions on that particular scanner

I'm using Carestream 3600 intraoral scanner with my Exocad lab. I moderately happy with it, but the margins suck. I wish I'd got a desktop scanner instead.

Got a screen shot of the prep scan?

as Bryce said. DOF is a great scanner as well as the identica series. both very reliable and some models with full articulator support. you just have to consider what will you use it for mostly and which has the best support in your area. personal recommendation would be the identica hybrid.
contact resellers and explain your needs and the one that gives you the most help and support will be the one to stick with.

Here are some samples of the intraoral stls I get from the Carestream 3600, to my untrained eye they look like crap. These are not cherry-picked, I just swiped a few at random. I notice all the exocad tutorials on are using beautiful desktop scans of models, which is telling me the intraoral scanners are not as good. We also tried Dentalwings intraoral scanner with even worse results. We've had Carestream try to train our dentists and assistants on blood, saliva, packing cord, even laser, with no improvement. If anyone has ideas on how to improve these scans, it would be hugely appreciated!

To be honest it's not to bad. I think it just managing the environment and keeping it dry.
I have heard good things about 3m Capsule for tissue management.

Dry the field and use two cords. Pull the top cord after a few minutes and take the scan.
This will help eliminate most of the bridging between the tooth structure and gingiva.
Looks like some of the molar preps have data voids near/on the margins. (distal margin 3rd screen shot)

I just talked to the dentist/s here about the double cord tip, they told me it causes too much bleeding usually and makes the scan even worse. BUT they're going to order that 3M capsule astringent and give it a try, ..so thanks so far for the tips!
