doc is either telling you that his prepping and impression taking are so impeccable that no die trimming is necessary because all the margins are completely exposed and crispy clean so the docs gloating, or the doc has no idea how a crown is fabricated ... which one is it ???

could be digital talk also ... one day well look back and the doc will actually be right ... we will never touch a bur to a die due to digital.

To expose the margin and emergence profile. This assists in the fabrication process. A clearer margin above a ditch lets a technicians tools find the margin beyond any reasonable doubt. Also, when scanning, it is not necessary to ditch the die. As long as the scanner can see the margin only a minimal trim is required to basically clean things up...
If the doc really wants to know, have him visit the lab and see how it's done.
