nothing wrong with that. just ensure the scanner is connected to a USB port in the back, and the backup drive is connected in the front - a separate usb bus.

I would go with the second one. The newer operating system will be supported longer than Windows 7. Also as eyeloveteeth said, a fair difference in the processing capabilities. Also the second one has a 1T SATA drive compared to a 120GB solid state. The difference would have to be $500 or more in favor of the 1st one for me to chose that one.
