Macro,micro lenses

Hi all, Just purchased a new Nikon D3100 camera with 18-55mm.zoom. It focuses down to 11 inches, and was hoping it would be adequate for photos of my work, both in the lab and mouth. I'll probably have to spring for another lense to get optimum results. Anyone tried the filter types of screw on lenses that increase magnification? I know it's a cheap solution, but a good macro lense is more than the camera. Nny suggestions are welcome.
