Unlicensed labs

My God,
I cannot believe a dentist used a cheap chinese laboratory without telling the patient.!!!

I can at least sleep easy knowing that he would have passed the savings onto said patient

Interesting question here. In Florida your are supposed to be registered with a CDT on the staff. Okay, you can stop laughing now, you know that's just not true. Labs are paid by the dentist. There are 8 million unregistered labs in south Florida doing work for a lot of docs, even some high-end guys use them as they are so cheap. What options do Canadian dentists have for lab service if the lab has to be registered and they collect from a separate invoice to the patient.

The labs are all registered with the provincial college . The dentist and patient can see who supervises the lab in question. Therefore there is accountability on the lab side.
I’m not sure I answered your question Doug

I guess the question was: are the docs required to work with a specific group of labs, All of them being registered in their providence or the entire country of Canada. All labs in Canada are registered? Are there "garage" labs there?

There are unlicensed labs out there for sure. Most dentists would send to local labs just for the convenience and time factor but I’m sure there are some that send out of the country. I dont think they are obligated under law to send to registered Canadian labs as far as I know. In fact the patient could request it since they are paying the bill.

The issue as I see it, as in this case, is that the dentist marked up the lab bill to make a profit from it. That is a conflict of interest violation which is punishable by his dental college. The reason he was caught was that the patient probably complained to his college about the crappy work and the college investigated.

He's still practicing and prolly will get off with a slap on his wrist ... Dontknow

Code:
"Kaloti is still an official member of The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), and runs a practice in Norwood, Ont. "

that was 5mo ago too, would love to know where this all ends up. and he closed his doors in 2022, but is practicing at a new location...probably doing the same thing. interesting set of circumstances. i would imagine it will take a bit longer for this to get sorted/settled.

"There are 8 million unregistered labs in south Florida doing work for a lot of docs," This does not sound right....

Probably, as long as he pays his dues.
