Initial result on a standard test crown. Machine hooked up right out of crate and run with existing templates used in the 5XS's big brothers 5X200 and 4X100 (no tweaks allowed).

  • Margins actually look pretty good.
  • Appears to be a very minor tweak on the calibration in the X axis but still far within acceptable limits.
  • Surface finish on the occlusal surfaces appears muted when compared to the bigger mill (fewer actual discernible tool marks).
  • Time was approx. 18 minutes, finish down to 0.6mm tool so quite a bit slower than its brothers but not obscene.
  • Tool change time is very long 75 seconds which is having a big impact on time- but we definitely can sort that out.

All and all not bad for a slam-dunk-fire-er-up-and-see-what-we-got test on a brand new wet/dry 5-axis machine with ballscrews, linear guides, heavy-duty frame and 100,000/60,000 rpm 500w spindle at a price starting under $30K (with table) to boot.

You're gonna want to pic one of these little monsters up... ;-)

Sorry for the delay in responding. A lot of good stuff going on over here.

Margin offset? We don't need no stinkin' offset.

Nope. Zero offset, we cut the margin, you don't need the extra bench work do you? ;):)

Combination of Software capability, machine construction/dynamics characteristics and our manufacturing knowledge allow for this.

Used DentMILL for CAM Software. Though no longer supported by Delcam it is by us and frankly, in our opinion still remains the best overall CAM solution in terms of machining strategies, cutting parameter control, tool axis control and customization/automation to address changing customer/market needs.

We are however continuing the quest to seek an alternative that provides us the ability to produce restorations of the quality we require. There is no heir apparent...yet.

Affinity...you'd have to talk to the designer or the person that set up the settings for that case.

Exactly Ken. You wouldn't believe the designs we get. Here's some more margin porn.
Sorry for the dirt; they were pretty well handled (mishandled) before I got a chance to get to 'em.

My select's I mill at .1 and on stellar preps .05

.2 is what milling centers set up for their mills so there are no headaches :)

Our templates actually use .02mm - just to be on the safe side.;)

These were done on the versamill 5XS...
