We don't do a lot of ortho related products. Mainly just Essixes and retainers. We are using our Asiga 4K to print KeySplint Night Guards. Can you print retainers? Is that better than the old way of doing a suck down? If so, what resin? Thanks

KeySplint Soft is indicated for such (and bleaching trays) but I have yet to make time to try it. Definitely curious if anyone is using this method! Hoping to cycle this in in 2025

I guess I also need to ask about how you would design a retainer in 3Shape. We are designing Night Guards in 3 shape, but don't know how I would design a retainer which are much thinner.

@Brett Hansen CDT gotcha, I'm not sure about 3shape design software mods. I use 3shape automate for straight forward NGs but for difficult cases and spear style bite planes (bc automate falls short), I use my zz bite splint mod. It would be pretty easy for me to make essix but I'm curious about longevity/ care @ .8mm

I have printed a few retainers. We use a Nextdent 5100 (we're an in-house lab) and OrthoFlex resin, which can go as thin as 1.5 mm. We haven't tried going any thinner. It is possible to design retainers in 3Shape; you just have to trick the software a little. In the step where you add the bar, just pick the bar option with the smallest dimensions (I can't remember which one it is off the top of my head) and make a short spline. I usually put mine on the incisal edge of the anteriors. Make the bar as narrow as possible and "bury" it in the shell. It should be small enough that you won't see it on either the interior or exterior of the shell. Then proceed through the rest of the steps, but don't adapt the retainer to the opposing teeth. I don't know if this method will work for you, but the dentists and the patients seem to be happy with the ones produced this way.

Curious, did you end up printing retainers? Just bought an Asiga myself and in the event a retainer is needed, would prefer to just print it. Was thinking of printing with Keysplint Soft Clear

No. We just make them the old analog way :)
