Thanks for posting this up Mark !
With the many post this week and train wrecks on the board, its got me thinking I need to join in and maybe I can help make a small difference .
I've been one of those few techs that's always thought the CDT test was to easy and I've been to stubborn to just do it and be apart of the few that want the best for this highly skilled industry that's shrinking..
I see this field becoming more highly skilled, and technical, than non skilled........Its so true that some labs have less skilled lab workers! can't deny that.
This past July I visited a milling lab with no real lab techs.

Well, nobody can say the NADL and NBC are not bringing opportunity to every corner of the country. This calendar will probably double. Lot's of chance to get involved for those who want to help.

Mark do you know if there has ever been a proposal to have a higher level of the CDT certification program.......advanced and such, to own or operate a lab. Seems like it would be a better idea for the owner to have a little more than just the CDT behind their name.... or an employee with a CDT. I'm not down cutting the designation at all ! Just seems that a higher level of education-certification, would go a long way in making our field more professional in some way, and get away from the idea of being unskilled assembly line bench monkeys that work for peanuts.
With cad/cam growing by leaps and bounds, it seems from someone like me without that knowledge, that this technology is making it easier to make a crown with less technical knowledge....... Its as though, these highly technical machines can let a computer geek take over our professional. I have no answers, just seems that one day the highly skilled lab tech will no longer exist as we know it today......... These times are changing for sure.. as far as changing for the best...It will be up the leaders in this professional that will decide that..........
I have a brother who is a CPA in another state, as best as I can remember, he has to take aprox. 100 hours or more, can't remember, of CE classes per year to keep his certification .
In our field, anyone that can grind red marks on porcelain with a little contouring experience, is a so called lab technician.
It want be that long from now that labs will be looking for computer gamers to run and later operate dental labs......that's not stretching the truth very far.
Our only hope is education, certification, and strict guidelines to keep our profession from dying out and the majority of work being shipped overseas........
Sorry for my rambling :)

My scanner comes in this month......Even though I still haven't got my CDT yet, with 39 years as a lab tech and working in 3 inhouse labs, it should be illegal and a crime to operate a scanner without some kind of certification.....
Anyone agree?

Hahaha, that's not only close to the truth, it IS the truth!

I am in agreement with you completely, and I have made the argument time and time again, that there should be some kind of credential for a lab manager.

I could see the test including the standard written exam for the dental knowledge and material science, along with a written speciality exam with questions about financial terminology, human resources and federal labor law, as well as FDA GMP and OSHA questions, and issues of product liability and business ethics.

Follow that up with a comprehensive practical exam where the candidate does a full blown P&L, and also troubshoots and reconciled some scewed up ones to forensically correct them. Add in some work on production standards and you have one heck a valuable credential.

You'd have a $200k per year job waiting for you in almost any corporate lab, or single lab over 100 people. Manufacturers would also snatch you up in a heartbeat.

There is no doubt the program could use some updating, but it's a huge undertaking, it has to meet international standards (see Bennett's links) and we would have to make sure it didn't become obsolete in one year which is the problem with a CAD CAM CDT.

The milling machines and wax printers in most labs today are nothing like the equipment we use with our CT scanners, so which standard do we use?

No, but you should have one to sell a product made from it. I believe the party responsible for the item that goes in the patients mouth should be credentialed.

We agree......Just don't think its right to design a crown/frame without more training than just knowing how to use the software/punching keys on the keyboard........

Sorry, not talking about me......Anyone can be taught to use a scanner, that's the point.
My 30 yr son may start working with me who has never worked a day in my lab. From what I've seen so far, it wouldn't take that long to let him do all the scanning and designing...... Should I let him do it........hell no.....It may take years to teach him what I've learned from 2 years in lab school and 39 years in the in the lab.
What if my son worked with me for 6 weeks then decided to work in another lab, or open up a milling lab. In my eyes, this would be dangerous situation and lead to failures without a lot of supervision for years.
This new high tech equipment can be bought by any lab tech will little to no experience or investor . I would hate to see some group of investors etc open up a large cad/cam lab with techs with little experience, paid low salaries and have bottom basement prices. This will happen if its not already happening.

Milling centers are a dime a dozen, and cheaply because it takes little REAL knowledge to make a coping or framework, especially when you can do an anatomical design and tell the software to give ideal cutback for support.

There is one giant center being built right now. The owner is a former exectutive from one of the big manufacturers and he's setting up to take only STL files from digital impressions systems.

He's not using milling machines. No models will be made at all.

You'll be hearing about him soon enough.
