As most of you know I retired at the end of Feb this year. Evidently it not that easy to quit being a curious dental technician, so here goes.
My wife is going to have an implant placed soon and I think I'm confused with the newer surgeons. Normally,, when we got work done at any dental practice we would get, without asking for it, a professional courtesy for the procedure. I don't expect any discount, but it is a nice when it happens. The doc who is removed the tooth and will be placing the implant charged us full fee for the process. His associate, who is a friend treated us differently in the past, and he's cutback on his work schedule. We also went in today so they could do a try-in on the surgical guide, the assistant was who made the final decision on the fit. What' up with that? If it doesn't fit it's their scan that is wrong, the printed model is wrong and that's their inconvenience, not mine. Any way, in the paperwork they presented us they accept no responsibility if the implant fails ever. I get them covering their ass, but for decades we've been restoring failed implants for nothing because: "The surgeon isn't getting any free implant from the manufacturer, we're (the dentist) having to do it for free, so the lab does it for free." Since WE are part of the team, what is the truth to this? Have the labs been taking it up the arse for a long time on this type of remake, or is it some thing the newer surgeons/periodontists have started? You dentists on here can chime-in as well as I'd like to know more from your side. I worked hand-in-hand with the office nextdoor for 38 years and this was/is their mantra for implants. BTW, health is good, numbers for my progress are very good.

Sounds like this particular surgeon doesn’t want to be responsible for anything - I haven’t encountered that before.
As far as the labs responsibility - I view us as a limited liability part of the equation. We obviously can’t be responsible for aspects out of our control. If the patient develops an infection and the implant fails, how on earth should that fall on the lab ? I could name countless other fields that also work this way. It’s one thing to remake as a courtesy, but it shouldn’t be expected when it’s beyond the labs control.

our butt is always sore from the way we get treated. straumann will compensate the dentists if an implant fails they will also supply new implants and parts but they will not compensate the techo for the remake nobel is the same
