Uh

Is it possible to fix a hairline crack on a PFM by just refiring the porcelain and not having to grind down and build up again?

Thanks

Maybe also try slowing down your ramp time on cooling. If it is a quick cool, add 3-4 minutes for cool down.

It depends why it cracked. If it’s because of a poor framework design or a CTE issue, it’s likely to crack again. Sometimes it will fracture well after it’s been fired.

Thanks everyone

It definitely cracked from cooling down too fast.

I definitely listen to your advice. This is why I ask. I am no ceramist by far as I just do fcz. Doctor sent in a PFM bridge done by someone else and that just needed some gingiva porcelain added.

I couldn't find the CTE for Noritake EX3 anywhere . Any ideas?

These crack heads didn't mention to slow dry that bridge or any restoration that has been in the mouth.
I f you plan on adding porcelain to anyone else's work , stay away from high fusing porcelain. use low fusing ,even on an old ex3.

It may be hard for you to know what someone else used for metal and its cte with EX3
If it's been in the mouth for awhile, you would want to soak it in denatured alcohol for 3-4 hours, maybe even overnight?
to try to dry it out. And use a lower temp and lower temp porc.

Here is the best I could find as far as EX3 cte: https://dentallabnetwork.com/forums/threads/changing-metal-for-my-ex3-porcelain.15688/#post-130103

I searched everywhere on noritake website and even on the instructions and nothing mentions the CTE but that last thread posted by Car 54

It is actually a new bridge but doctor sends these out of state so the turnaround is pretty long it seems. I would normally not do this but doctor was insistent :( I did warn him something could go wrong.

I have a gingiva porcelain with CTE of 14.0-14.1

If you have any emax gingiva, I would use it.low fusing will save your bacon.

That low temp cycle will probably fix the crack too.

If you have any GC Lustre paste, mix it with your emax pink and fire it on your emax glaze cycle.

* never sell your lustre paste*

Does this mean the porcelain I use should be closer to the 12.4 or the 13.4-14.4 range?

Closer to the 12.4 range (12.4 - 13) as you're layering it on top of Noritake.
