What else can be used to put wires on a model when making a retainer instead of wax because I don't have a boilout? Any tips would be very helpful.

im no retainer specialist but here are a few things to consider..

you might try superglue. you will need an accelerant so it cures immediately.
personally i just like to use monomer. they do sell superglue accelerants in a spray bottles but im not a fan. its just something extra to buy and when you spray it .. it gets all over everything.
if you need some extra strength for the wire you are trying to hold in place take a small round burr and drill a small hole on each side of the wire into the model. (this will add mechanical retention instead of just chemical). then fill that with superglue (and around the wire) then use a tiny drop of monomer and it will setup immediately (gets hard as a rock) holding everything in place. also now days superglue comes in all different thicknesses. dont use the supper thin stuff that is runny and gets all over the place. i like a medium body glue and they do sell it in a bottle with a brush. (kinda like nail polish). thats the one i like to use for this application. i use other types for other stuff. dont get stuck (no pun intended:)) and think you have to use the same superglue for everything. its cheap. try different stuff.

i have seen some techs use a hot glue gun. for me its a bit slow to set up and i dont find its ability to hold to be dependable.

as far as not having an "official" boil out.. you dont really need one for that?
a great alternative is having an instant hot water unit installed under your sink. i have one and have found it invaluable. i use it all the time. no muss no fuss. gives you instant scalding water anytime. great for wax cleaning.

but if you want the ultimate non boil out solution. some day think about getting a steam cleaner. but.. you have to get one that is adjustable. it must have the ability to make the steam wetter or drier. dry steam is great for cleaning marks off the dies in a c/b lab but is almost useless for wax cleaning. the steam needs to be wet for wax cleaning.
bego makes one and reimers makes one. bego is $3500 plus and its not that great in the longevity dept. its pretty on the outside but doesn't really have any balls. the reimers unit is the one you want. its about $2500 and its a wax cleaning machine. and comes from a great company.

good luck.

How about American made, long term I have had my CD Nelson about 20 years (has needed 2 repairs in that time took 2 days to be repaired). Has adjustment for dry or wet steam & even can have abrasive added for metal cleaning. Agnis is really easy to talk with she will set you up, U can even ask if she has any trade ins. Steamshine Steam Cleaning Systems & Steam Cleaning Accessories : CD Nelson Consulting Inc.
Denture dud do you have the instant stainless tank or the white one? Last year I change ed the boiler to the stainless & those filters are terrible expensive, or have U found a less expensive one to use?
dford if U do use the instant hot use a 3 gal bucket to catch U do not want wax in your drain lines. & as the instant hot ain't cheap U can just use a tea pot to boil some water and pour in on the model into a plastic bucket.

thanks for the info on Nelson. i have never heard of them. looks like a great product.

i have the stainless one. i dont use a filter. were lucky here, the water is naturally pretty soft. i just budget for a new one every 5 years or so. for the reimers steamer i blow it down once a week and it seems to be fine. (i got it used, its prolly getting close to 25-30 years old).

as for the wax in the plumbing problem.. well you know.. its a problem:eek:
no breakthrough in that dept.

i just keep a few inches of water in the botom of the sink and skim off the wax every morning when its hard. kinda like the good ole days with the boil out units. and i make sure under my sink (before the plaster trap) is quick and easy to take apart and clean.

also as mentioned in other recent post here.. most of the wax is not melted to a runny state. most of the wax is heated just enough to be slightly soft,, peeled off, and collected. theres no big mess like back in the day. i give it to friends that are into candle making.

all you need is a lab knife to pick the wax off and pumice then high shine the wire will remove the rest . I use a 2.99 cent coffee(thrift store find) mug warmer with a cup with the wax in it: it keeps it melted for me through the bending process

I Assume U R Using Sticky Wax. I Use Strip Wax. Its Softer. Its Strong Enought To Hold The Wire And Peels OfF Real Easy When Done. I Also Use A Steamer For When I Wax On Finger Springs. The Strip Wax Comes Out Real Easy. Good Luck.
