Hi all.
Just looking to see what specs are being used ATM.
We are using i7- 4790 with 16 GB.
GeForce GTX 1060.
Running 3shape 2017 and millbox.
Just seems to hang a little now during scanning and also when designing....
Cheers... Jeff

You need a lot more memory than 16 GB

16gb isn't enough for full mouth cases. 4790 is a decent cpu, but it's like 6 years old now. might wanna think about upgrading

As far as I understand 3Shape uses single core processing which mean a high core frequency will be helpful. Millbox on the other hand uses multi core processing, so lots of crores is good. What I use is a overclocked pc with a couple of high running cores for 3Shape and the rest a bit lower to keep things stable.

If you have to upgrade immediately, you could look into the 6 core 8700K or the 8 core 9900K. we're using 9900K and it's beastly. unfortunately, the price is also beastly.

if you can wait a bit, Ryzen 3000 series will be released next month. the 8 core 3700x will be similar to 9900K in single thread and much better multi thread for like half the price and lower power draw. and the 12 core 3900x if you really want max performance. be sure to get high speed ram with this setup, as it's sensitive to ram speeds.

I heard that before and I think this is rather important to have in mind.

high core frequency isn't by itself the most important. overall single thread performance is determined by instructions per cycle (IPC) and frequency. higher frequency doesn't mean it's faster if it does less during each cycle. a higher frequency chip isn't always faster, unless they're the exact same chip.

Great information....thanks for that.
I will keep the graphics card i think, which will allow me to throw some extra at the CPU.
Ps. Are the quadra GPU cards better for our work than a gaming card?
Cheers

the programs aren't very gpu intensive. I'm using a 1080 and it usually sits at 10-15% usage.

Something to think about. Intel processors are expensive, but 3shape specifies them and only them. Short version, they may blame any weird issue you get support for on the AMD processor as it's not ( :) ) indicated (cough)...

Thanks for that, i didn't give that any thought☺
I wil contact my 3shape tech guy and ask his thoughts.
I guess AMD have been in the background for a long time.
Always loved their bang for buck CPU's back in the Athlon days.

Is there anyone on the forum running AMD?

AthlonXPs were awesome, a little conductive paste and they were unlocked wooo!

The K6 IIIs were gold if you could get one in the P5 socket Pentium days.
