I am using a design service and the hold message is "We can not design the nightguard because the scan do not generate the base, please send a better scan to proceed with the case, thank you".

What are the common issues that prevent 3Shape from creating a model base?

Thanks!

Could be a lot of things, from the border of the scan, the holes, scan overlaps or distortions, orientation of the scan in the space, the calculated depth of base being too shallow and pierce the palate... long list.

Ha! Yes, l should be more specific. Narrowing my ask:

I use MeshLab for visualization and STL file cleanup. Here's what I sent, I can invert or flip the black & grey sides. Does the face orientation of the STL matter for 3Shape?

Yes thats the problem. The scan is inside out.

Odd, usually thats just a .ply format issue

Was this initially an impression scan? STL files do have an 'inside' and 'outside' facing, but generally a scan software if told it's an impression will work this out itself before export.

I flipped the faces and then the model was generated. "Yes" on both counts... it is an impression scan and it was saved to disk as PLY at one point. Double whammy? Need to check inside/outside before I move to the next step.

Thanks!
