Hi people,
We're thinking about getting a printer. Does anyone know if you can send a file directly to the printer and bypass the scanner. Then have the model and oppos. ready to go the next day. The file would come from the Drs.

If the doctor is processing the scan data into a ready to print model in a format that your printer accepts then you would import that to your print software, prep and print.

More than likely the doctor is sending scan data that must be imported into CAD software to create a model design that is suitable for printing. Once the model is designed you can save it as an .stl or multiple .stl's if there is a model, die and opposing. Then you would open it in the print software that comes with the printer, orient the file, add supports and print.

YouTube has some nice tutorials that show the workflow.

Glen, if you have a printer and accept files would you ever need a scanner or can you bypass that. We would receive file directly and have the software so we could design and either print models or send to file to someone to make whatever we need. We would have a computer also with the necessary software. Are people starting to do this and would scanners become obsolete?

If you'll always receive the scan files directly, you won't need a scanner, just CAD software for building the digital model, etc. from the scan files.
