why is it necessary to soak the master model in water for 15-20 mins before duplicating?

Hydrocolloid is largely water, no surprise there right? In order to keep the hydrocolloid from drying out and being inaccurate where it contacts the model, presoaking the model makes sure it is full of water as it can be so it doesn't pull water out of the hydrocolloid or pull hydrocolloid into the model.

Tricky part is the model will start to break down after being wet too long, so that's why it's also a bad idea to leave them any longer than necesary.

@JMN for hydrocolloid does it take a longer soak time?
For alignate, Jeltrate regular set, I'm at 8 minutes of soak time without the sticking to the model.

It’s like jungle love, in the surf, in the pouring rain.
everything's better when wet.
The question to everyone's answer
Is usually asked from within
But the patterns of the rain and the truth they contain
Have written my life on your skin

I use silicone to dupe my models.
This gives me unlimited dupes and a model for any future repairs.

Never timed it. I just lut it in water when I start cutting the stuff and when it comes out of the microwave I give a shake and put it in the dup flask while stirring to temp for pouring.

the water forces the air out of the model, if you don’t soak the model that air will release into your hydrocolloid and presto your duplicate model will be ruined

Agreed but the benefits always prove worthy for that one case that will give you fits.
Silicone is great if you warranty your work.

Ya might try soaking ur models in the same water--- not changing it... The water over time gets a bit of "slurry" in it and doesn't abrade the models. Kinda like new walnuts vs. old used walnuts....the dust is in the air... the dust is in the water....

I never used silicon. You can't recycle it like you can hydrocolloid, Right?

Purely a one use material. Mix part A and part B, it solidifies permanently.

well, it only takes shape once, you can use it many times for pouring/packing

clarity Jmn, use clairty...

you can pour models and acrykic into it as many times as you like you can only pour silicone once.

You can chop up old silicone and loosely fill the flask and then fill with new, that way you're not using all new every time,
