How do you cutback your layered zirconia?

  • Leave the incisal edge in zirconia, just a "window" cutback

ZirkonZahn's "anatomic" cutback does a wonderful job.

there are 3 ways.

1. ridged coping. just morph a coping to add support.

2. high lingual/metal occlusion style. start designing anatomically and then cut back. shrink remainder to minimal.

3. micro layer. same as 2 but only cut back .6mm sorta useless to design it this way because the sharp edges become markedly less pronounced post milling. easier to grind off a layer of zirconia, but that really puts unnecessary stress on it.

and yes i use all 3 methods regularly.

It depends on the prep and clearance, if I need to just add some cusp tips a little then I select a simple coping. But if there is 2mm plus on the occlusal space then I select a anatomical crown and do a cut back, either facial or 360°.

i am always skeptical that this window will not easily chip or break off.
