agreed there 100%, I'm not saying that certifying is a bad thing......im just saying the CDT for techs is a load of bull**** no matter which way you slice it. Lil
furthermore, having a lab owner thats certified doesn't mean your work will be completed by a certified tech, not does it mean that the certification will have any bearing in the least upon the work
its like having that lovely heart surgeon (or dentist) with their cert but the office staff does all the work.

get the point yet?

The surgeon and dentist have a closed shop based on the education and testing to practice. We could not OJT either job. As long as the lab can operate with only people that learned it as a craft it will never become a profession.

The letters will never be worth the effort until we have rules in place that make a minimum amout of education and credentialing mandatory before a lab can open its doors. That will take the sacrifice of time and money by those in the industry. Most techs I know are more concerned about having toys first and then not having a few hundred bucks needed to join the NADL.

To register in Texas you must have a CDT on staff at least 35 hrs a week. That means the start up one man lab must be a CDT to open here.

As for getting your point, the attitude of most of this industry is the reason I have a great business and am doing better every day. If those in the industry would have seen the benefit of school and credentialing it would be very hard to import work from China at the percentages it is here today.

Tom, please explain this point more clearly. How would this have changed anything we see today?

In Texas I had to work very hard with the lab in China to have a CDT or record for that lab so I could sell here. We now have three CDT's in that lab on a rotation and all the owners are CDT's. There are only three other labs in China that I know of that have done this in Texas. The TSBDE is working to find those that are not sending to a Texas registered lab. In the end it is the dentist responsibility to show do diligence and use only a Texas registered lab and when this starts coming back to them it will make a big difference.

If this had been done on a Federal level and there was enforcement the entry into our domestic market would have come with a price many offshore lab would not have been willing to pay. Those that did would have more costs and the price would be higher making it easier for domestic labs to compete.

The lab industry in China is working on a credential that will equal the CDT and will IMO eventually reach a reciprocation agreement with the NADL/CDT program. The domestic industry is again being caught with their proverbial pants down.

I catch a lot hell because of my involvement with importing because the people doing it just don't want to admit or come to grips that they and their attitude about schooling and credentialing deserve much of the blame for cheap imports.

Just looked into the MDT program here in Switzerland, its around $25000 for the year program... Not worth 3 letters.
wow 25K is alot of cash here in the U.S the cost of the course was about 5k (2006)

but we all need to ask what will the cost be if the industry on a whole reqiures credentials ?that some may not have or plan on not getting
i have my MDT and PTC ( produtivty training certification) in ceramics, i began my CDT years ago but never finished
i do plan to finish if for nothing else than self accomplishment

More bureaucracy=higher cost for credentials. For the simple fact that THEY CAN! I let my CDT lapse, because to me it cost money that didnt make money.. of course if I needed it to own my lab, I would PAY to keep it up.. But do I REALLY LEARN MORE? I mean $85 to 'rent' an infection control DVD.. everytime you need more CE? I would be in favor if it didnt involve high fees... I understand the money is 'supposedly' used for lobbying etc.. but it doesnt seem to have helped much... Our fate is in the hands of the DR.. the one who sends us work. The US is a capitalist society and while its nice making over $600 for a PFM here in Switz., I dont like the government controlling prices and practices... TO AN EXTENT... Do we really want to start trade embargos with countries like China so our domestic market will grow? It sounds good.. but capitalism (I hope) should fix the problem.. The main issue is the consumer, in this case the patient or Dr.. And EVERYONE who purchases anything.. Buy domestic, or kiss your financial security goodbye! This is something that I think Switzerland is a stand-alone in the world.. the prices here are higher, but its 'almost' all made here, and everyone has a job, and is paid very well for it.. Socialism anyone?

Should a federal program be added (Obama loved to add gov interference it could happen). With the requirement for schooling & a nebulous CDT (I dropped mine in 1981). Where would students go for schooling? The NADL reported that there are only 12 schools now in the US, (when I went to university there were almost 200 with dental programs). Until this industry can afford to or just does pay more than min wage to start; or half what most industries pay for skilled labor students won't spend dear funds to obtain degrees.
Tom I do appreciate your incite and commentary, especially lately you seem to have mellowed out and show stronger logic. Your experiences are well worth reading about, just wanted to say thanks. AJ Luckow

I suppose the socialism works when the country is tiny with a well educated motivated population. Not all countries have these nice situations to work with. Some countries have a lazy, poorly educated group that feels entitled to free tax money that they have most likely never contributed to. The work ethic is not in place for socialism to work in larger more difficult to administrure populations. Socialism works when all want a to work. I don't see the direction my USA is going to work out with so few wanting to work, & so many feeling entitled to not work. Just my 2cents worth (well .25 cents as 1.75 is taxed & fee assessed). Oh I but domestic to the greatest extent I can, some things I just cant find made in USA anymore.
I would really like to see a mandate for the DDS to declare point of manufacture, to the end user the patient.

Its a great point.. from Great Society, to Entitlement Society.. When a man doesnt have to work for his fish, then you eliminate the work ethic with time, granted it may only be a few, but the next generation is unbelievably lazy.. I dont know what comes next.. the rich (workers) get richer and the lazy get poorer. I love what Dennis Miller has to say about it, "lets help the helpless, but not the clueless".

Try and find a bike in the US that isnt made in China.. its almost impossible.. This goes for most anything... I think a generation that has grown up thinking that Walmart is the only way to shop, has just sold the countries domestic manufacturing and small businesses down the river....

I would really like to see a mandate for the DDS to declare point of manufacture, to the end user the patient.

should this be to everything put in the patient's mouth during treatment or just the stuff you make?

Should it be an oral presentation with a Power Point presentation and few pages of forms signed off on in triplicate?

For those that want to make it work the way they are doing it now by making others change how they are doing it ......I am truly grateful.

First, you should get your eyes checked. Not only have I NOT bullied anyone with a CDT, I actually said...
I'm not saying that certifying is a bad thing...
even though I do not keep my own CDT current I don't belittle anyone that chooses to do so. It's their choice. When I took the exams, they were 30+ years out of date and while they've been updated some...they still aren't completely current or relevant to dental technology today.
Second, just because my opinion isn't the same as yours it doesn't mean I should or that I will sit silently.
Third, the site is far more than sharing dental knowledge. This thread has plenty of back and forth with varying opinions. Some you may agree with, some you may not. It's part of what makes DLN as great as it is.

Hey Thomas,..he said stop "bulling" people man,...Cmon!!!

Bulling is a behaviour seen in cattle when one mounts another, usually when one or the other is a female in oestrus (in heat)"bulling" is commonly used as a term for a female in oestrus. Female cattle in oestrus may mount any adult cattle, especially a bull (fertile male) if one is present, but they will also mount castrated males or other females. A bulling female will often also be mounted by other cattle, both male and female (only fertile males are usually capable of mating). A dominant bull will defend the bulling female from being mounted by other cattle.
