Here in Vancouver, we have labs charging $90 for a PFM, the competition is very hi and Chines and Korean lab owners are breaking the price and hurting the market badly. I charge around $250 for PFM and this is already in the higher price category!
There is a new company with some discharge Dentist and 20 other Dentists from across Canada, they open a lab in China and they found the gap in Canadian health care system and soon we will see the Chines Crowns in Canada as well. I think the best approach is to inform the public and let the public decided which lab they want to use and if we could change the system and cut the hand of dentist from making profit from the lab and charge the insurance and the patient directly, there would be no reason for the Dentist to look for Chines product, instate they would look for quality lab work. |

I believe many dentists do not even know that the crowns they prescribe are being made offshore. Why you ask?
Because until FULL disclosure laws are enacted, there is nothing stopping anybody from sending work away from North America and then selling to a dentist and calling it there own......unless of course they WANT to. For as many dentists that may want less expensive work for whatever reason, there are just as many that would want the work made where they reside. South Carolina and Florida a couple years back passed some legislation on full disclosure laws both the the dentist AND the patient. By law, both parties have the right to refuse work from offshore. These laws have helped things stay much more organized down there (I have spoke with friends that work in each state about this). I thought once these 2 states passed the laws, that others would follow - kind of the "domino effect" but up to this point, nothing else has happened. It is a touchy thing. The ADA could help, even OSHA and the CDC. |

I don't know if it would be a good idea for patients to know what our costs are if it were for only one thing. For example, if I pay $150 for a crown, but my fee is $500 or higher, the patient will want to know why the "mark up" is $350. What the patient does not see is the staff fees, insurance, equipment, utilities, school debt, etc., that all go into overhead.
Thanks for letting me vent, Mike[/quote] Uh..er,..ahem.. $500 (or higher)??? 500 is the goin' rate just fer the cement ain't it? I think you guys stopped hawkin' our wares for a nickel back in 1970..since Radio Shack sold it's 1st COCOII with 64K Extended color basic - you guys were rakin' the pot over an' over again fer $1200 per.. But hey, - them blue pt. napkins ya tie aroun' their necks with roach clips ain't cheap..not ta' mention yer in ground pools..an' a Benz..an' the junkets ta' Myrtle Beach..an'... |

I guess I repeat myself ...from another thread...just minutes ago....
Unrestrained pursuit of profit is not a healthy thing for any nation. You get this kind of thing. We are an ambitious, greedy, and curious, group. (humans) The restraint of these habits, however, can't come from the force of government or law, to succeed. The restraint needs come from the individual person. Very basic I suppose, but, seems to be the way we are. Some, as pointed out here, are forced to work in ways we would rather not. Some are passed over and ignored, others need to work with dangerous and inferior products, because the ones that pay us request these things be done. And they have little or no concern about the outcome. True, some of those that make the requests are trying to help the less fortunate. So much gets lost in our high speed days. And you better keep up, or, you'll be used for traction. So, do the best you can to help out, everywhere. Interesting thoughts in that quote. Makes me think the way I usually do. |

Heard on the news today that face book is now more popular than Google. Maybe a face book page devoted to our (off shore)concerns will help spread the word and enlighten the youth of tomorrow.
Any thoughts all. jeff |
