Default FDA regulations looming?

Rumor has it that the FDA is going to act on NADL's suggestions and other concerns on imported crowns and impose mandatory registration and more regulations on domestic labs. Have you heard more about this and what do you think it would impact our practices? I'd love to hear both postivie and negative views on this issue. Thanks.

Do you want the feds to step into business with you??
Is there something we can do to compete with the outside, and not need federal or state local help??
"we're from the government, we're here to help".
Regulate domestic labs??? What imported crowns cost, what domestic crowns cost, have the government decide?? Cost of any type dental lab product??
No &*^%ing way.
Mike.

This is a topic I have been keeping my eyes on. I thought the ADA wanted to keep a handle on lab regulations and not let the govt. get involved? I hope the govt. does not get involved.
It would cost more to meet fed regulations domestically, so we would have to either accept less pay for our products or increase our prices? Increasing our prices could push the docs. to try out an over seas business?

Interested in what others have to say or have heard.

I think the ADA's official position is to keep the government off. Most domestic labs, except for a few larger ones, also want no government involvment. My own calculations show between $10-15,000 dollars annually for compliance once the FDA ruling comes down. This includes filing fees with the FDA, DAMAS or ISO certifications, continuing records keeping, someone to fill out all the forms (often twice!), any necessary software and/or consultants, etc. It's about 500 PFMs to grind if we net $20 to $30 each!

I think if the NADL or FDA make it mandatory for doctors to tell the patient what materials, who made it and what country it was made in, a lot of doctors, labs, and especially patients with insurance will suffer. No one will want a crown that was made in china. That will change everything.

FDA is going make it impossible for the small labs to apply with new rules or whatever garbage they want us to comply by because these idiot labs that offer the cheapest crows and these cheap doctors that want to make a quick buck. They are going to ruin this industry.

I would like to know what percentage of labs are less than 2 technician?

A Great Article

Sorry I am mad, reading that LMT article makes me hate my job.

Default I hate my job

Hi Travis

I agree. I hate my Art Work job. I frustrated at doctors if they treat us, the technicians as the laborers. I also dislike those cold hearted lab owners who are minds and hearts slave-chained to their master, money. (Fortunately that I am self-employed)

Fortunatedly, I am a dental technician. God give me a stable mind. My eyes healthy as my wrists are in control hold and paint the porcelain's brush tip back and forth over ceramics plate. I love to see the blend of colors when hours later it will form into a look alike human tooth. Does it wonderfull to watch the transforming from opaciuos to translusion? Who can transform these artificial porcelain powders into these beautifull art work if not the dental technicians. Us, not them. I love my work even more if have a chace to see the prettier smiling face of that same person after . I love my occupation.

Doctors knew they will never be happy when making average $15.00 per hour but they also obligated to tell the patients: YOU WEARING A MADE IN USA APPLIANCES or you have MADE IN MARS MOUTH PIECES.

Lab owners knew they can never sit still on their bench and making as much $$$ as they are hungry for. So OUTSOURCING.

I thanks doctors that appreciated technicians hard works.

I thanks all of my fellow technicians that had been and still been tried to help each other in oder to bring our occupation to a higher level.

I also thanks Dental lab network gives me the chance to speak out. Sure I made my points and sure I make somebody mad but this is just my own opinion. Please bear with me.

Thanks

I've noticed through the years that all the technicians complaining about overseas competition are going to get exactly what they deserve (FDA Mandatory Regulations). Which is really sad if you ask me, only two things will ever seperate yourself from a Doctor outsourcing overseas.....wanna take a guess? Come on, take a stab at it...lol
